Momul Tea Factory: Committed to Sustainability

At Momul Tea Factory, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. From our pioneering Rainforest Alliance certification to empowering farmers with climate-smart practices, we are dedicated to protecting the environment, supporting our communities, and producing high-quality tea responsibly. We continue to invest in clean energy, farmer education, and ethical sourcing—because a better cup of tea starts with a better planet.

Sustainability focused.

Renewable Energy Use

The factory has adopted renewable energy sources to reduce its carbon footprint and reliance on firewood, which is commonly used in tea processing. This shift helps mitigate deforestation and promotes cleaner energy alternatives.

Farmer Training Programs

In collaboration with Unilever and the Rainforest Alliance, Momul has been involved in the Farmers Field Schools (FFS) program. This initiative educates smallholder farmers on sustainable farming practices, improving both the quality and yield of tea leaves .

Quality Incentives

The factory has encouraged farmers to prioritize quality over quantity, leading to higher bonuses for those who deliver superior tea leaves. For instance, in the 2023/2024 financial year, farmers at Momul received a bonus of Ksh 50.30 per kilogram, the highest in the West Rift Valley region

Sustainable Agriculture Project In Momul.

The project began in 2006 to help the small holder farmers make more money by adopting sustainable agriculture. After the initial meeting between the project manager and the board, 31 tea farmers were selected from growers of Kapkitony buying centre (ML 13)

The selection was based on willingness, age, level of education as well as the geographical location. Initially, there were series of trainings for the participants on monitoring for quality and improvement as well as Farmer Field Schools (F.F.S)

The F.F.S members met twice each month for normal sessions and began with plucking interval trials. In July 2007, the initial F.F.S was scaled up to six (6) schools covering the entire Momul electoral zones. By March 2008, the first F.F.S (Taboita group) graduated by staging a field-day in which they demonstrated to other growers what they had learnt.

Sustainability in Action: The Story of Daniel Tanui

“When we grow together, we grow stronger.”

Meet Daniel Tanui, a dedicated smallholder farmer from the lush green highlands of Kericho. For over 20 years, Daniel has been a loyal partner farmer with Momul Tea Factory PLC, cultivating high-quality tea while embracing a way of life rooted in sustainability and agricultural diversity.

Daniel’s tea farm is a testament to resilience, commitment, and innovation. But his journey doesn’t stop at tea. Over the years, Daniel has expanded into dairy farming, coffee cultivation, beekeeping, and avocado farming—a diversified model that not only ensures food security for his family but also stabilizes his income throughout the year.

What makes Daniel’s story remarkable is the direct support he has received from Momul Tea Factory, made possible through Fairtrade and community development initiatives. Through regular farmer seminars and training, Daniel has gained valuable knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices.

But beyond training, he has also received practical support:
1. Avocado Seedlings: Supplied by Momul to help him tap into new income opportunities.
2. Beehives: Provided by the factory to promote honey production as an additional source of livelihood.
3. Extension Support: Technical advice and field visits to help him manage diverse crops and maximize his farm’s potential.

“Fairtrade is doing us a lot of good work,” Daniel says. “Momul is supporting me not only in tea but also in my other farming projects. We’re about to harvest honey from the beehives they gave us, and we’re already harvesting avocados.”

Daniel Tanui’s farm is now a thriving example of agro-ecology in practice—a place where tea grows alongside coffee, avocados, and bees in harmony with nature.

His story is one of thousands in the Momul Tea network—proof that sustainable tea is not just about the leaves we pluck, but about empowering farmers, protecting biodiversity, and building resilient communities.

Our Commitment to Fairtrade

At Momul Tea Factory, we believe that great tea starts with fairness—from the lush green fields of Kericho to the hands that harvest each leaf. That’s why we are proud to be part of the Fairtrade movement, upholding ethical and sustainable standards that protect the rights and livelihoods of our farmers and workers.
As a certified Fairtrade partner, Momul Tea Factory ensures that:

  • Smallholder tea farmers receive fair prices for their green leaf, helping them support their families and invest in their communities.
  • Fairtrade Premiums go directly to local development projects—improving schools, healthcare access, and infrastructure in our surrounding communities.
  • Our practices promote environmental sustainability, including responsible land use, minimal use of agrochemicals, and long-term soil health.
  • We maintain transparent and traceable sourcing, giving you confidence in every cup of Momul Tea.

Through our Fairtrade partnership, we’re not just growing tea—we’re growing opportunity, equality, and resilience for the people of Kericho.
